As usual in the peptide conversation, the products wearing the name live in very different worlds, and the marketing works hard to blur them. Here's the plain-English version: what GHK-Cu actually is, which forms are legitimate to buy, and where the line sits as of this writing.
The short version: GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide. As an ingredient in cosmetic serums and creams, it's legal and widely sold — as a cosmetic, with cosmetic-level evidence and cosmetic-level claims. As an injectable or oral product, it is not FDA-approved, is not lawfully available through pharmacy compounding as of this writing, and is sold only as a "research use only" vial — the gray market's label, not medicine's.
What GHK-Cu actually is
GHK is a tripeptide — three amino acids (glycine, histidine, lysine) — that occurs naturally in human plasma, saliva, and urine, usually found bound to copper, which is where the "-Cu" comes from. It was first isolated in the 1970s, and its circulating levels have been reported to decline with age — an observation that, as with NAD+, does a lot of heavy lifting in the marketing.
Researchers have studied GHK-Cu for decades, mostly in laboratory and animal models, with a smaller body of human research focused on skin appearance. The published research literature describes a wide range of biological activities; what exists in humans is largely small cosmetic studies rather than the large controlled trials that establish a medicine. The cosmetic lane: serums and creams
Most GHK-Cu products are cosmetics — copper-peptide serums and creams from mainstream skincare brands, sold over the counter. This is a legitimate, legal market, and it's worth being precise about what "legal" means here:
- Cosmetics are not FDA-approved. The FDA doesn't approve cosmetics before sale (color additives aside); it regulates them after the fact — they must be safe as used and honestly labeled. That's a lighter framework than drug approval, and it's the same one governing every moisturizer on the shelf.
- The claims must stay cosmetic. A cosmetic can claim to improve the appearance of skin. The moment a product claims to heal, repair, regrow, or treat, it's making drug claims — and a GHK-Cu serum marketed with drug claims is a product out over its skis.
- The evidence matches the category. Small studies have reported improvements in the appearance of aged skin with topical copper peptides. That's a reasonable cosmetic-ingredient evidence base. It is not proof of the sweeping regenerative effects the vial-sellers extrapolate from lab research.

The injectable lane: a different story entirely
Injectable and oral GHK-Cu are where the copper-peptide conversation leaves medicine. As of this writing:
- No GHK-Cu injection is FDA-approved for any use.
- GHK-Cu is not on the FDA's list of substances allowed in pharmacy compounding, which means no licensed US pharmacy may lawfully prepare an injectable or oral GHK-Cu prescription. The vials sold online are "research use only" material — no prescriber, no pharmacy, no verified identity, purity, or sterility.
- The FDA is actively reviewing this space. GHK-Cu is among the compounds scheduled for the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee session in 2027. But the committee is advisory only — even a favorable vote wouldn't itself make GHK-Cu legal to compound, and as of this writing nothing has changed its status. Same molecule, different products
A copper-peptide serum from a licensed cosmetics brand and a "research use only" GHK-Cu vial are not the same product at different strengths — they're different legal categories entirely. The serum is a regulated cosmetic. The vial is an unapproved drug substance with no one accountable for what's inside. The name on the label doesn't transfer legitimacy between them.
